Update on Bruce Phillips

Photo of Bruce Bruce "Utah" Phillips (a.k.a. "U. Utah Phillips") holds a special place in the hearts of many 3RFS members. He performed at the very first 3RFS concert in October 1988 and at several subsequent 3RFS concerts.

A few years ago Bruce developed a heart problem, and his doctor told him that he had to find a less strenuous career path. He now performs only once or twice per month at various locations around the country. You may be lucky enough to find him in your neighborhood. Pacific Northwest fans can look forward to his benefit concert for Northwest Folklife in Seattle on May 29, 2004.

Viewers who are unaware of Bruce's considerable literary talents will enjoy reading his own account of his medical problems as well as reflections on his career in folk music. These were included in a November 1995 IWW publication. A preface by the editor was updated in 1997. Check out Bruce's letter.

Bruce's career has expanded into other media. Beginning in 1998, he hosted a weekly one-hour radio show, Loafer's Glory - the Hobo Jungle of the Mind. The show was produced through April 2002, and recorded versions still are broadcast by some radio stations, and over the Internet.

A Web site devoted entirely to Utah Phillips has gone on line, thanks to the efforts of Christopher Dunn. Check out The U. Utah Phillips Appreciation and Information site.

Bruce would be glad to hear from his many fans. You may send cards, kittens, and other forms of encouragement to him by snail mail at:
